Yorkies are amazing little dogs. And there are many reasons to adopt a Yorkie.
Like with every dog breed, Yorkshire Terriers have their quirks and perks that can make them the absolute perfect dog for you–or will send you running in the opposite direction!
Here are 7 reasons to adopt a Yorkie, things that we love about Yorkies, and why I think they’re the greatest breed out there.
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #1: They are really really smart
You can teach Yorkies all sorts of fun tricks, and obedience training is really quite easy with Yorkshire Terriers. They are highly intelligent with a high need-to-please, which results in them being wonderful students. Check out this adorable video of Misa Minnie, a Yorkie who has learned all sorts of weird tricks!
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #2: They will cuddle all day if given the chance
Yorkies were bred to do two things: kill mice and cuddle. They’re pretty emotionally needy as a result, but if you want a cuddly dog you can’t get much better than a Yorkshire Terrier. My Yorkie likes cuddles so much we’ve learned how to cuddle while I work.
I personally love the emotional neediness of Yorkshire Terriers. If you are looking for a more chill companion, a Yorkie may not be for you. Maybe try a more mellow breed like a Shih tzu.
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #3: They have strong personalities
This is either a big draw or a major con, depending on what you want in a dog. Yorkies are little dogs, but have big personalities. On top of being emotionally needy, they can be stubborn and ornery. However, they are also very eager to please which makes them a very entertaining dog!
Many people adopt Yorkies not realizing how big their personalities really are. They expect a small dog they can carry around in a purse or a small dog carrier who just kind of trots around but mainly just sits there looking cute. That’s not exactly what you get with a Yorkshire Terrier.
Be prepared to treat your 5-pound Yorkie the same way you would if he were a 100-pound Labrador retriever. Yorkies need a lot of training, they need to learn obedience, and they need to be socialized just like any other dog or their personalities may take over and instead of a pleasant, friendly dog you’ll get an aggressive ankle-biter.
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #4: They are freaking adorable
OK, we couldn’t make a post about Yorkshire Terriers without mentioning how adorable they are. This is one of the reasons Yorkies are actually one of the most popular dog breeds out there, according to DogTime, and a fun perk that comes to owning a Yorkie is that there’s a lot of versatility in how you groom your dog.
You can leave her hair long, cut it short, put it in a ponytail with some cute Yorkie hair bow clips, or even cut his hair like a little schnauzer!
Their small, cuddly look makes them one of the cutest dogs in existence.
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #5: It’ll keep you active
Don’t let their size fool you, Yorkies love exercise. Yorkshire Terriers thrive if they walk for about 45 minutes to 1 hour a day. Many families split this up into 3 segments. A quick walk in the morning and at lunch with a longer stroll in the evening leave you with a very happy dog.
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #6: They are Hypoallergenic dogs
That’s right, Yorkies don’t bother people with dog allergies. There are always exceptions to the rule, but if you are an allergy-sufferer who desperately wants a small, fluffy companion the Yorkshire Terrier might be for you!
Make sure that you spend time with a Yorkshire Terrier in an environment free of other allergens to ensure that you are not allergic to Yorkshire Terriers. As well, Yorkshire Terrier mixes are not always hypoallergenic, so be wary before adopting a Yorkie-Chihuahua mix!
Reasons to Adopt a Yorkie #7: They are incredibly loyal and loving
Not only do they love spending time with you, they will truly love you. Yorkies are very loyal dogs, and many Yorkshire Terriers spend their days happily following their owners around. While your Yorkie may love other people, you will always be the #1 human in his or her mind.
